Fuji claim the X-Pro 1 outperforms the 5DmkII and D7000

UPDATE: I have seen a full HD video by the X Pro 1 here:

It is horrible: the only thing you can hear is the very noise auto focus... See for yourselves

Fuji is indeed getting the most out of smaller sensors in terms of low light performance and resolution.

According to various articles, and mostly this chart, it beats the D7000 at resolution and noise performance, and the 5D mkII at resolution, with a close match on ISO noise. Well at 1700$ body only it'd better be that good because it's only 70% pricier than a D7000 that is way faster to operate !

However, is that really important?

If you look for a documentary compact to shoot a tribe in it's forest camp at fire light, it's probably really cool to have. If not, why is the world who you shoot past ISO 3200 ?

Knowing that the D7000 is already performing top notch at 3200 (on a A4 print you couldn't see the difference I guarantee you, stop counting pixels on 100% view :p )

Anyway, the good news is Fuji is innovating and figuring out way to produce super sensors with terrific performance, that's really cool. To make it short, Fuji sensors have:

  • great dynamic range (not as good as film but great)
  • low light performance for a small sensor size
  • better color rendering

The bad news is that once again manufacturers pitch resolution and extreme low light results as the most important characteristics of a camera.  This is wrong. I looked at these shot above, and yes they are quite clean with good resolution, but they look boring as f#1%. Look at my previous post, here is one of the pictures from it:

I couldn't tell you what used to shoot this, but I can assure you it's medium format. See how it feels compared to the Fuji stuff. Point made.

And clearly, that's why I still don't shoot digital for anything in natural light. I love the convenience and all, but it looks boring. Can't help it.
I do see great digital work from people who really use post processing like a painter would, and I love it. It's just not what I do. I'm not being underground or snobbish or anything: I just suck balls at post processing.

An other example: 67 format, Fuji pro 400h film, 1/15s. No editing.

Tones are not realistic, but they look great, clarity, blur and details are simply humiliating any DSLR (only a 30000$ digital sensor can get close to that, but won't even match it). And I have seen full size D800 36MP sample shots and no, it still doesn't get anywhere close to it. It simply is a matter of sensor size. Ok noise is huge at ISO 400 and 800 on film, but who shoots with no light? And the feel, the FEEL people ! I mean look at it ! That's what it's all about, not pixel counting.

Ok so what's my point? I did write the same in about 10 posts already. My point this time is:
Fuji, Pentax, Nikon and Canon people, when you send us sample images of what your cameras can do, can you ask an actual photographer to make those samples? This way, we can see how your gear can help  transmit a feeling.

So what's left to remember about our X-Pro 1 friend:

  • great sensor performance for digital
  • but slow AF, no proper MF (unusable)
  • if lenses and built quality are matching the X100, should be great
  • if you want to travel light, could be a great camera
  • it you want to shoot art photography, not even close.
  • it's too expensive.
Does it outperform the 5D MKII and D7000? No. It's like saying the Twingo outperforms the Porsche 911 because milage is better. It's one metric, one feature. Resolution and low light performance? Not even important for proper photography.

Update: Fuji X-pro 1

Full specs from photorumors.com. It is already sold out in pre-order, and the body only costs...1700$.

1700$...for a non full frame compact. I am skeptical. Can you in 2012 sell a non full frame body at 1700$ that is non full frame? What do you think?

If the lenses are amazing, the likes of a Nikon 50mm 1.2 AIS , Zeiss  G mount or Leica M, why not. But at this price, the body has to be FLAWLESS. Any less than perfect AF, viewfinder, sensor at this price, and it's a no go (if it focuses like the X100, no thanks).

I'll definitely get my hands on one and do a review, I am on the one hand very tempted because my dream digital camera would be exactly that with a full frame sensor and versatile mount, so this is as close as it gets. On the other hand, I have very nice Nikon prime lenses, why should I spend 2300$ in that system when a D7000 costs 900$ ? Apart from the compact factor... not worth it.

Nevertheless, Fuji is the only brand exploring that segment, and I love it. It keeps getting better, and I really can't wait to see what they will launch in the next 2 years. The first 24x36 premium compact?

Nikon D4 and Fuji X pro1, and a potential RIP.

A lot of hot news today, a good one, a so so one, and a bad one.

    The good one first:
Fuji is doing a interchangeable lens compact with a DX DSLR size sensor. The X Pro 1, for March. It should be 1300€ with the 35mm 1.4 lens. It is good because this is in line with the well built X100, because Fujinon lenses are likely to compare to good SLR lenses, they are prime lenses not zooms (18 F2, 35 F1.4 and 60 F2.4). It is probably too expensive but well, for a traveler looking for SLR quality in a compact solid format, this could be the best product around.

    The so so news:
Nikon announced the D4. Yeeaaahh.... Available in March for only 5800€ or 6000$. It will shoot very fast, be very very very light sensitive (due to 16mp on a large sensor, a good thing), it will measure light really well, focus really well etc etc.
Why is it so so: if you are a sports, wildlife or war photographer, good for you. It also films really well. And you can expense it as a pro. In that case it's a brilliant camera. For other...more patience.
For every one else, it's useless and too expensive, and certainly not worth the extra 4500$ you'll need to spend to step up from a D700.
    It's a good news because soon you'll be able to get a D700 for 1500$ :)

    The sad news:
Kodak is nearly dead. They are on the edge of bankruptcy. They completely ignored digital, never believe in it. Plain dumb. However it is sad, because the best B&W film I know is Tri X, and I really really hope they will keep on making film...
